Big Bang Theory?

For those of you who have read Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons you might already be familiar with this project.  300 feet below Meyrin Switzerland, scientist are set to turn on the one most expensive machine ever built.  Meet the world’s largest particle accelerator named The Large Hadron Collider.

The Large Hadron Collider was built to look at how the Universe was created by analyzing particle collisions.  This has quit a lot of people a little nervous since no one knows what could happen if things go wrong.  Either way it’s still a very interesting project which deserves  more reading.  If you are interested, click on this link for the full New York Times story.

This picture shows how big the tunnel is, 17 miles in which scientist will attempt to circulate a beam of protons:

so they couldnt try this on a smaller scale first????????

in an environment easier to contain????

    me a tell bout idleness!!

before dem go put them brains to better use!! like find a cure fi the common cure

    wow

So they’re still trying to figure out proper time travel at the speed of light..we can travel at the speed of sound, so what about having a sound universal society first… then try and advance a more stable higher thinking group of people into the future.

yeah, and if something goes just a little bit wrong they could end up creating a black hole! HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!
i cannot wait to see what happens when it finally turns on, but i’m also very afraid.

discovering how earth was created or how the universe was created will never be accomplished. we are yet a young species compared to everything else on the earth, but we can scratch the surface. very kool

I read this article on the net yesterday.
    What a mammoth project!!!!!!!!!!
I’m all for finding out solutions to theories, and what a theory to solve…….., however my main concern is what the immediate environmental effects will be to the earth as we know it? could this set the plates of the earth moving and cause earthquakes in places like turkey?

Ummm….. why worrie about how the universe was created etc…man, they could of used that money on saving lives in Africa and other parts of poor country’s.People/baby’s/children are hungry and starving in this world and they use $$$ to this radom yet powerful machine that they don’t even know what will happen if they turn it on??? $%&*&^!”??
I don’t know man, some scientist think they are GOD or something…building BIG BIG things to find things out then can’t control it afterwards is my worry..Look at Titanic theory.

    im actually so scared ahha,
i think im pretty sure the world wont end but.

To the first poster, there are many smaller particle colliders in many countries around the world. They have proven to be safe and we have made many discoveries with those.

This one is the largest, but there should be no reason to be scared. Numerous tests and reports have been conducted spanning back to 2000 (thats 8 years) proving this to be safe.

The theoretical Black Holes will be EXTREMELY rare, if they pop up at all… If they do, they will very quickly (in about a billionth of a billionth of a secont) evaporate. Harldy enough time to “gobble” the Earth.

People complaining about money…theres more money spent on loads of other things that could be better spent elsewhere. Corporations are raking in heaps of money every moment of the day all over the world that isnt going anywhere but into their own pockets.

Why complain about something that will help us understand in more detail about the true nature of the universe? To my mind…that is one of the most awesome things about being a human being. Being able to understand the Universe and where we came from.

    Now lets start SMASHING!!

This topic is fascinating! Damn impressive.…I’m definitely behind on my theoretical physics, but have always been intrigued by that aspect of science. Ideas about the origin of things have always made fascinating science. thanks for putting this up, guys. :-) The sheer size and volume of the equipment is mind blowing. I’m impressed with their level of cooperation and intellect that has gone into the development of this project. I like to see progression in science, the science minded part of me says yes..but parts of me are a little hesitant but fear is just another excuse to curtail curiosity in the unknown.

Scientists will most likely never be able to answer the question of why anything exists at all. That is the domain of philosophy. The debate between creationists and evolutionists is an ongoing contest where there is no winner. I think these questions will always go unanswered. but it’s only natural for the human mind to seek answers, to its questions. As Scotty from Star Trek used to say, “you cannot change the laws of physics,… I beleive the Big Bang theory provides the scientific evidence of the universe being created by God. god is the energy before the big bang. intelligent energy. ;-)

I’m not sure if this is official but they will have a live streaming. take a look at this site.

coolerthanthou – Sorry to burst your bubble but there IS no contest between Evolution and Creation. The ONLY winner is Evolution.

Also, god is not the energy before the big bang and neither can energy be “intelligent”. Nobody knows what was before the big bang but it most probably wasn’t an intelligent being who “thought” the universe into existence.

    Thanks for the link though!

From what I gather, is that most people fear that it could create a black hole because of its circular shape. Wouldnt that be crazy. Some people are not worthy of science, and create things that do more harm than good.

Each and every episode of this show is very important for me b’coz I am a big fan of comedy series and this is one of them. I just love to watch Big Bang Theory Episodes online.
