Takashi Murakami will Present New MCA Exhibition with Pharrell Williams Curated Performances

Japanese artist, BBC collaborator and longtime friend, Takashi Murakami, is set to present his latest exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) tomorrow, June 6th.

Titled “The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg”, the exhibition shows how Murakami’s art is rooted in traditions of Japanese painting and folklore, and highlights the artist’s careful attention to craft and materials. It also showcases the artist’s astute eye for the contemporary influences of globalization, media culture, the continued threats of nuclear power. “The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” will be available for preview by fans at MCA’s “ArtEdge: 50” gala, celebrating the museum’s 50th anniversary. The event will also feature a special concert curated by Pharrell Williams, including a performance by singer/songwriter and actress, Janelle Monáe.

MCA “ArtEdge: 50” tickets will be sold starting June 6th, and prices will start at approximately $2,500 USD for both the gala and concert, and around $250 for just the concert. Murakami’s “The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” will be open to the public up until September 24th.

Tennis Hu Release Party Recap

In celebration of the release of the Tennis Hu shoes—Pharrell’s first signature shoe with adidas—we transformed the BBC NYC flagship store into a Tennis Hu themed space for a launch party. Decked with adidas and BBC branded merch, the store also featured a custom-made HU sneaker display structure with glowing green and yellow lighting, illuminating the new shoes. Inspired by the adidas Stan Smith silhouette, Pharrell’s Tennis Hu is essentially a modernized tennis shoe, featuring flexible primeknit, a lightweight EVA midsole, and a built-in lacing system.

Special guests included Stretch Armstrong, Smoke DZA, Kirk Knight, Kerwin Frost and Luka Sabbat.

We also debuted our BBC NYC exclusive Ace and Court tees in celebration of the Tennis Hu launch, that are now available in store at 7 Mercer and online here.

We’d like to give a huge thanks to adidas for sponsoring the event! Click the jump for recap pics of the event.

Welcome Our 1st European Flagship

STORE GRAPHIC WHOLE

Covering over 800 sq ft and split over 2 levels, the new store continues the success of the recent pop up ‘satellite store’ in London and also marks the brands first permanent space in the EU. It follows the New York store – which first opened in 2007, and the Japan store, which opened more recently 2012. The stores interior reflects the brand language as engineered by world famous designers- Wonderwall. Divided into 2 concepts, the decor bares the ‘Starfield pattern’ that has become synonymous with Billionaire Boys Club, contrasting with the clean 1950s ice cream parlour identity of ICECREAM.
